Happy National Sponge Cake Day
One of the first non-yeasted cakes is thought to be the Sponge Cake. Gervase Markham, an English Poet and Author, published the first printed English Recipe for the Sponge cake in his book titled “The English Huswife, Containing the Inward and Outward Virtues Which Ought to be in a Complete Woman, in 1615.
The Sponge Cake appeared in the 2003 film Calendar Girls, starring Helen Mirren. In the scene, Mirren’s character, Chris, enters a baking competition but then forgets about it, submitting a store-bought Victoria Sponge cake instead of her own creation.
